ARIZONA: Saat hendak dipensiun A-10 Thunderbolt justru pamer kemampuan. Pada 3-4 Desember 2014, pesawat serangan darat milik 354 Fighter Squadron, dari Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona, dan Fighter Squadron ke-74, dari Moody AFB, Georgia, melakukan pelatihan malam hari. Bukan itu saja, Warthog juga sukses melakukan pendaratan di landasan tanah yakni di sebuah danau kering.

Kegiatan pelatihan yang didukung oleh Skuadron Taktik Khusus 23 dari Hurlburt Field, Florida, yang memberikan kontrol lalu lintas udara di landasan terletak di dalam zona serangan simulasi “mirip dengan apa yang dilihat di lingkungan dikerahkan.”

Kegiatan semacam ini berguna untuk memvalidasi prosedur yang digunakan saat operasi terjadi dari dalam wilayah  di mana tidak ada zona pendaratan didirikan di bawah kendali.

Selama pelatihan dibuat simulasi Warthog tidak bisa mendarat di landasan biasa menyebabkan misi harus diubah. Pesawat berikutnya melakukan pendekatan rendah tanpa bantuan arahan konvensional dan instrumen termasuk malam yang menggunakan NVGs (Night Vision Goggles) mendarat di landasan pasir. (VIT)
